Private equity is feeding the U.S. RIA frenzy

Institutional investors are increasingly fueling consolidation in the U.S. wealth management space, taking advantage of deep pockets and long-term horizons to drive high-return opportunities. According to the latest RIA M&A Deal Report from Echelon Partners, 78 transactions were announced in Q3, and 2021 deal activity is on track to surpass the 205 deals recorded in 2020. Private equity firms are emerging as major contributors, backing serial acquirers like Focus Financial Partners, Captrust, and Thomas H. Lee Partners to accelerate growth.

High-profile deals included Bain Capital taking a minority stake in Carson Group and Onex Corporation acquiring into Wealth Enhancement Group. Echelon CEO Dan Seivert notes that serial acquirers trading at a nine multiple can double the valuation post-integration, highlighting the appeal of RIAs for PE investors.
